LibreOffice Math

22 Apr

LibreOffice Math is a simple but comprehensive module that allows you to produce high-quality vector images representing mathematical equations. From being a stand-alone application up to LibreOffice 3, it has now been absorbed into the other applications as a module, accessible through Insert/Object/Formula.

This command creates a small box in your document for the formula graphic, and opens up a text editing panel at the bottom of the screen. You can type directly into the panel or right-click to select components of your formula from drop-down menus. Math will convert the text version of the formula into the resulting image. Other options control the fonts used, the text size, the spacing and the alignment.

Here, for instance, is a formula from a calculus textbook, with the accompanying source code:

LibreOffice Math can also be used for chemical and other formulas:

Documentation for the Math module can be found on the Web at wiki.documentfoundation.org/images/6/65/MG35-MathGuide_LO.pdf.
